We Are Making a Film About Mark Fisher

Genre: Documentary  |  Runtime: 66 mins  |  Language: English  |  Age Cert: 12A  |  Country: United Kingdom

A DIY, collective essay film made with 70 contributors, drifting through Mark Fisher’s ideas to ask what solidarity and cultural production can look like in the perma crisis of 2025 and 2026.

Made with no budget, no studio backing and no institutional permissions, We Are Making a Film About Mark Fisher began on a park bench in Rochford, Essex, and grew into a collectively produced essay film by Close and Remote (Sophie Mellor and Simon Poulter), supported by 70 people via an online call out. Across nine drifting chapters, the film travels hauntological terrain, from Felixstowe’s windblown beaches to the CCRU, from Capitalist Realism to The Vampire Castle, folding Fisher’s words into contemporaneous footage shot in London. It moves through political rupture and media noise, and deliberately projects beyond 2017 into the perma crisis of 2025 and 2026. This is not nostalgia. It is an evocation of failed promised futures, and a working group for collective dreaming, a reminder that DIY does not mean private, it means working together.
